Heading into the next week of substitute teaching, Young Life leading, Starbucks barista-ing, I thought I should review the past week and the moments that stuck out in each of those activities…

  • Monday and Tuesday –  I substituted in the same fifth grade class, during math some of the boys thought it would be fun to see how much they could get away with, they quickly realized it wasn’t much…After I made a comment about their rude behavior and they needed to knock it off or face consequences one said something like “You can’t do anything about it.” My response was, “You don’t think I can be mean, I’m the teacher not you, and I have no problem making you do push-ups, clean up the classroom or some other fun activity if things don’t change. I can be mean!”
  • Monday, Young Life – I led my first game at club last Monday.  I chose the traditional, Eat-Pudding-While-Wearing-a-Nylon-Over-Your-Head-Game, that my Dad brought to SK Young Life back when he was a leader. It was a big success, and I’m so excited for 80’s Night tomorrow!
  • Wednesday – My day started off with the news that we would be having a fire drill at the school I was substituting in, of course on the day that I decided to wear a dress (w/o tights or leggings) and it was pouring rain outside, shortly after that once the kids arrived I had a first grader vomit all over himself, and had to rush him out the door down to the nurse’s office. Twenty minutes later a second student threw up in the trash can and I urged him to scurry down to the nurse. I had a third go home with a fever that afternoon. And on top of all the vomiting and sickness, I had another student steal something I had taken away from him off my desk. Wednesday was an eventful day…
  • Thursday and Friday – Subbed for afternoon kindergarten both days! So much fun! Could definitely see myself teaching the little ones! :0)

I think that’s about all for now, or at least as much as I can type before my eyes start to close. It’s an early day tomorrow followed by Young Life tomorrow night! Peace out!

So today in the first grade, we wrote stories using “ar” words. The kids had six words to use in their stories: farm, yard, shark, car, star, and barn. Some of them were just so cute that I have to share them, and I kept their spelling the same so enjoy!

“Hi I’m Juliana I live on a farm with a red barn. In my yard I have lots of anamales like hairy sheep, blue sharks, and fast horse. Tomorrow I will get up and feed the anamales. Then I will get in the family car that is purple. Next I will come home and look at the bright yellow stars in the dark sky.  Then I will go to bed in the farm.”

“Once upon a time there was a pink pig who lived on our farm that wouldn’t eat like a pig he eats like a humun and I was in a blue car when I went to the crazy farm and I took out my pet grey shark and told him to make the pig eat. The shark was magic his eyes shined like stars.  In my yard I had the sharks magic wand and how he uses it he makes a whish and waves it.  The shark lived at the red water barn under the sea and now the pink pig eats like crazy. The end.”

“One great evening I saw my dads car drive back from the farm.  It took one hour to catch the Ners (Nurse) shark with the razer sharp teeth.  The Ners shark was rite by the barn.  My dog was barking at the shark in the yard. At night I saw a shooting star.  It was the greatest day of his life.”

“My farm is small rite by it their is a hungery shark. He dancess under the stars, but in the morning hes very hungery.  When a car comes he grouls (growls) at it. The shark sometimes likes to grab something to eat from the barn.  He loves to rooen (ruin) thing like the yard whenever I was up its a reak (wreck).”

Other than that, today I gave a math test. Which in first grade means reading the directions of the problem and then walking around checking and waiting for everyone to finish before going on to the next problem. I thought it went really well. My pacing has been something I’ve been working on and I’m usually too slow, well today my mentor teacher said that I went a little too fast. The test still went well and of course we had some student that didn’t do as well as others but, overall it was a success and now I have a few tools under my belt to help me become a better first grade test giver.  It’s hard for me not to feel disappointed about messing up, I really want things to go smoothly but I guess that’s why I’m student teaching and not out on my own yet, so I can learn how to become an even better teacher and have lots of practice. :0)

I have to work late tonight, but I’m so glad tomorrow is Friday! Yay for art projects and Fun Friday activities! And Happy Birthday Eve Sister! :0)
