Happy Birthday Mom!

It’s another sleepy Monday, one where I want to find a warm spot of sunshine and curl up on a blanket reading and then eventually drift off to sleep.  But unfortunately, I cannot do that…I’m stuck in the computer lab awaiting my dreaded math class. (I am counting down the days until it’s finished!)

This weekend was eventful, jam-packed and just a little bit crazy.  Saturday night was Mom’s big surprise birthday party (her actual birthday is today).  Dad and I have been planning the party since my birthday in December, and we were both anxious for the party to be over – no more stuff to worry about, guests to get in contact with, details to arrange, lies to tell the birthday girl.  Luckily, Mom was out of the house most of the day on Saturday while Sarah (who got home from Pullman, Saturday morning at 12:30) and I tried to lay out different party dresses for Mom. (She believed she was going to a reception for the Ugandans – the high school has a partnership with a school in Uganda, and that Dad really didn’t want to have to go but they were stuck).

After trying to find Mom the perfect reception/surprise party dress, Sarah and I headed over to Grandma’s where we (well mostly Sarah) baked a birthday cake for Mom.  I pretty much just chilled upstairs painting my toenails, watching “Juno”, and helping whenever Sarah hollered at me – she’s a very particular baker.  The cakes took twice as long to bake as the box proclaimed so we left Grandma’s house with 20 minutes to get to the florist before they closed.

Thankfully we made it, and I didn’t run out of gas on the way.  Once we picked up the flowers, and I dumped a whole lot of slimey flower water on my foot, we went downtown and killed sometime at this little jewelry store/boutique place.  Then we headed down to the restaurant.

Sarah had to finish decorating the cake, and we had to set up place-cards, menus, set up the DVD, pick some mood music, and make sure to introduce the guests to each other as they arrived and keep everyone entertained.

At 6:15, Mom and Dad arrived as planned – the private room we were in had one windown facing the entrance so Sarah and I had already decided to have everyone turn their backs to the window when we saw Mom and Dad approaching.  They walked around the corner and Mom was completely shocked! It was great just to see the look on her face, and have her call us all liars! :0)

The party went really well, with good conversation, wonderful food, and lots of laughs.  I hope she enjoyed it, because a lot of work (and money) went into the planning of the party.

So, with all that I just want to say thank you Mom for always being there for me, thank you for laughing with me, crying with me, helping me write lesson plans, teaching me countless other things over the years.  I am so blessed to have you as my Mom and I love you very much! Happy Birthday!
